Civilization VI on Switch is unwinnable for some, due to update 1.2.1

Update, December 2, 4.04pm:

Publisher 2K Games has discovered a fix for the crashes on Civilization VI’s Switch version. You might not like it, though: “A discovered known workaround is to declare war on the Civilization that is causing the crash right before you end your turn. This seems to alleviate the crashing in most instances. In order for you to know which Civilization is causing the crash, you’ll have to pay attention to which Civ’s turn it falls onto immediately before the crash happens. Once discovered, reload the save, declare war on that Civ and hit Next Turn. I hope this workaround helped out. If you have any further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to let us know!”

So, this is a temporary fix as the team are “currently working toward a solution”, and they aren’t sure when a permanent fix will arrive in Civilization VI.

Original story, December 2, 11.51am:

Civilization VI on Switch is plagued with a bug that makes the game crash moments before players secure a victory, which is theorised to have come in with the latest update (via Nintendo Life).

Lots of people are reporting the problem, and it appears to be affecting all types of special victory. Best-laid plans, etcetera, etcetera. To be fair, victory conditions in Civilization are extremely fiddly and ask for requirements to be triggered at vital moments in the game, so the fact that people are missing out is frustrating. Players are also stating that they are trapped on a certain number of turns in a game and it won’t progress, for example, one player is stuck when the game nears nine hundred turns.

And, in the Gathering Storm mode, Switch players are being surprised by the World Congress pop up which, on occasion, won’t let them vote and will freeze them on the World Congress forever. Yikes. Thankfully, Firaxis Games and 2K Games seem to be aware of the hiccups and the community is recommending that those affected should open a support ticket for assistance. If this is a part of the 1.2.1 update, the team would imaginably roll out a patch to iron out the creases, but there’s no word on when that will happen. We’ll keep you in the loop once we know more.

Civilization VI is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch.
